Established in 1854, it was founded by Roswell and his son Barrington King and the Archibald Smith family. They both came from the coast and started the Roswell (cotton) Mill and the Smith cotton plantation. Theodore Roosevelt’s Mother, Mittie Bullock is also from Roswell, and her house along with the Barrington Hall and Smith Plantation are preserved, restored and open to the public. Bulloch Hall, 1839 Barrington Hall, 1842 Smith Plantation House, 1845

During the Civil War, Sherman’s General, Garrard, burned the mill and shipped the workers (more that 400 workers) north to interrupt them from resuming work if the factory was rebuilt.
