The City of Powder Springs is a lovely community located in the West Cobb area. It was originally known as Springville because of the seven springs that run throughout the city area, but became Powder Springs in 1859. Powder Springs was incorporated in 1838, just prior to the Trail of Tears (the forced Cherokee march to Oklahoma). The downtown area has many historical buildings, including the Seven Springs Museum, across the street from one of the local springs. The oldest was built in 1834, with four others built before 1900!
Powder Springs has many opportunities to keep young and old alike busy. There is a new cultural center (area) called the Ford Center that will encompass a library, reception hall, senior center and cultural arts center. The Southern Quilt Trail is dedicated to preserving folk art and can also be found in Powder Springs. Powder Springs also has many access points to the popular cycling trail, the Silver Comet Trail. The Silver Comet is one of the many cycling trails built on old rail lines and traverses all the way to Alabama, about 100 miles. Both the Silver Comet and Alabama trails are non-motorized and are great for walking, bicycling, rollerblading, hiking and dog walking. Wild Horse and Lucille Creek trails also connect to the Silver Comet. There are also a number of parks to be enjoyed in the Powder Springs area.
Powder Springs is also a stable community for families with over 84% of the residents owning their own home and over 60% are married. Powder Springs is a relatively small community with only 16,000 in the population.
